The Wilds
2022A panda walks into a bar with a gun-
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.
A panda walks into a bar, orders a meal, fires the gun and departs.
Crack open our buildings, please.
Open us up. Crawl over our ruined cities
spread through our twisted metal and erode away our skyscrapers
We’re begging you, we’ve done so much to ourselves and frankly? We’re done
We absolve ourselves of all responsibility and it’s up to you now!
How will you destroy us?
Tear open our bodies from the inside, attack us with our own white blood cells
here, we’ll help you along with our lack of self preservation, all of us will catch it anyway so why bother?
How bad can a cough be?
You could make us eat each other. Disgusting, I know,
but we are already so hungry and so starving for new sensations that another one would be just grand
and we can just say that we’ve lost all higher brain functions,
just nameless shapeless bodies moving in a mass
get the satisfaction of taking lives but not the actual guilt of taking a life that actually matters, not a life that actually is one of us\
Or maybe, poof!
Some of us can just disappear like a magician’s trick
Taken away from this world that was always so temporary!
We can call it heaven or we can call it Mars
or we can call it a bunker all the way in New Zealand
There’s always an escape rope, maybe we’ll make an AI that will make all our decisions for us
Or we can just wait for you to come and take over
There’s just too many of us
so just get rid of the rest in a nuclear storm or a war or an accident
We’re not picky
we don’t mind how you do it
just do it swiftly and without delay
we don’t mind if you make us suffer a bit!
Crack open our buildings please!
We’ve always envied you, we’ve always loved you,
our human eyes are built to see so much of you and to delight in you
So you can have it all
you can have our cities and our words and our lives
Come and bleed forth new life to replace the ones we accidentally took
Cocoon us in soft lush greenery and rock us to sleep
telling us that it’s not our fault
We’ll propagate our progeny properly this time
We’ve always been the ones that eats, shoots and leaves.
