Art is 30% Magic, 70% Bullshit

The rest of it is a lot of work and stress, but that’s not what I meant. The spark of inspiration, the creative process; all those things are mostly nonsense, and you could get away with skipping most of them if you wanted to. You don’t need inspiration or ideas.

Take me, for example. A few years ago, I was walking home from a friend’s house, in the early hours of the morning when it really wasn’t safe to be out here by yourself. The wind was picking up and suddenly-

There was something in the air. Something sharp. It tasted like blood and salt. Something wrong.

And that’s where I got my idea from for this painting! This beautiful, majestic creature that just rips itself out of your mind in great big bloody clots when you get too close to it. The painting sells well- I can’t show it at art exhibitions because apparently they have a “no gore” rule, but it goes pretty well on DeviantArt and Etsy!

So, yeah, that’s how I work, basically. I just go out into the real world, look for something cool or scary to happen… and then paint whatever comes to mind afterwards!

I wish I could be more like people who can actually create things, instead of stealing them from reality. But hey, it’s a living.
